Radboud International Training on High Ability

Our programmes

At RITHA, we offer two types of programmes, called RITHA Specialist and RITHA Practitioner.

RITHA Specialist

  • The RITHA Specialist programme consists of 840 hours (30 ECTS), spread out over 18 months.
  • The majority (80%) of the programme is taught online, with the rest being taught face-to-face.
  • The face-to-face instruction is organised in three 3-day seminars.
  • Students will complete the training by realizing their Final Product
  • After completion, students will receive both the ECHA Diploma and the Radboud University Certificate

The program is divided into four blocks:

Block 1: Foundations of Gifted Education

You will obtain a scientifically based framework of gifted education and learn where to find and critically review new information for purposes of shaping and building your own personal views and practices.

  • Seminar I: Intro to Gifted Education | Get to know the intellectual, social and emotional characteristics of gifted and talented youth, how to identify them and how to provide appropriate educational services.
  • Online course: Educating Gifted and Talented Youth | This course covers important themes in gifted education, with the goal of teaching students how the talent-development needs of gifted students can be met within an educational setting through a variety of pedagogies and programmes. Moreover, students in this course are expected to develop their own views on the subject, instead of learning only one set of approaches.

Block 2: Critical Issues in Gifted Education

You will further explore and expand your knowledge and skills in one of the previously covered topics, together with international experts in the field.

  • Elective course | Students will choose one elective course of choice: an advanced learning course intended to help students explore important specific topics in the field of gifted education based on their personal interests.
  • Seminar II: Stepping stones, what do you know, know what you need? | Focus on different themes in Gifted Education and receive hands-on training and preparation for Block 3 by working on their internship proposal.

Block 3: Putting theory into practice

You will implement what you have learned, and you will put theory into practice. You will improve your professional skills and contribute to serving the field of gifted education.

  • Online course: Learning on the Job | The topics of this course will depend on your input. Presentations, content clips or discussions will be presented or started online.
  • Relevant Settings | You will visit three relevant settings and write reports identifying the scientific line (theory) to which the activity corresponds, its benefits and any points that call for further attention.
  • 200 hours of on-site practical experience | You will expand your professional skills, which you have built upon your solid, knowledge-based foundation in gifted education. Moreover, instead of following a set example, you will develop your own critical thinking about your day-to-day job, and you will start to recognise possibilities in the area of lifelong (positive) learning.

Block 4: Reflection on Gifted Education

You will develop your skills as a scientist-practitioner and improve the professional field of gifted education by making a scientifically sound contribution, the findings of which can be used by professionals seeking to serve the needs of high ability students.

  • Online course: Proposal writing | This course is intended to help you develop knowledge concerning scientific writing, on the basis of which you will write a proposal for your final product.
  • Final Product | In the last block of the RITHA training, you will realise your personal contribution to improve the world of gifted education, care and policy. You will do this by developing a Final Product. This can be a thesis, a scientific article, an article for practitioners (e.g. teachers, mental health workers), a scientifically-based informative brochure, a website, a video or some other product. In this product, you will use all of the competences that you have obtained during the first three blocks and, in completing it, you will be ready to act as an ECHA Specialist in Gifted Education.
  • Seminar III: What will the future bring? | You will present your Final Product and lead the discussion with the other students. After the presentation and discussion, the lecturers will decide on your final grade.

RITHA Practitioner

  • The RITHA Practitioner programme consists of 420 hours (15 ECTS), spread out over 12 months.
  • The majority (80%) of the programme is taught online, with the rest being taught face-to-face.
  • The face-to-face instruction is organised in two 3-day seminars.
  • Students will complete the training by realizing a Field Research
  • After completion, students will receive both the ECHA Certificate and the Radboud University Certificate
